Office of Counseling and Disability Services
The Office of Counseling and Disability Services provides two main types
of services. We offer Professional Counseling, as opposed to Career
Counseling which is provided by a separate office, and Disability Services.
Professional Counseling addresses students’ needs related to social and
emotional issues that may be affecting their day to day functioning, grades
and stable school life. Some areas of concern may be:
1) Conflictual relationship between you and your partner.
2) Feelings of isolation, as a result of being away from home and not having
a strong social support on campus.
3) Alcohol and other substance use or abuse.
4) Anger management
5) Suicidal tendencies/ Depression/ Self injurious behaviors -cutting
6) Mental Health issues
7) Violence against the other/ Sexual offending
8) Eating Disorders
9) Communication concerns
10) Problems related to interaction with the legal system
We provide an article addressing student issues each month in the Herald
–Residential Newsletter.

course of study at SSU, since it may take a few weeks to receive approval
from the Regent Center for Learning Disorders (RCLD). If you are already
receiving accommodations, you are required to seek approval and
accommodation letters before the start of each new semester.
Accommodations are valid for one semester at a time, and should be renewed
prior to beginning a new class. Students should not assume that professors
will provide services without this letter. The letter indicates the
accommodations that you are approved for and requires a signature by all
professors to ensure compliance.
It is the student’s responsibility to contact the Counseling and Disability
Office and seek their accommodation and discuss their needs.
Students who are diagnosed as having a:
- Learning Disability (LD)
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) / Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
- Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) and
- Psychological Disorder (must receive approval from the RCLD in Statesboro,
through our office, in order to receive these accommodations.
