Tigers Hold Sports Banquet

SAVANNAH, Ga- Savannah State University handed out certificates, plaques, Letterman jackets and rings during the annual Athletic Awards and Recognition Banquet held in Tiger Arena.

The theme of the 2008 banquet was "A Night in Hollywood".

Earning the top awards in their respective sport were:

Sharmyra Adams- Softball Best all Around Player
Tyrone McCoy- Men's Track Best Distance Runner
Vernon Williams- Men's Track Best Sprinter
Shawn Souvenir-Men's Track Best Field Event Performer
Victoria Burch-Women's Track Best Sprinter
Sharonda Redfield-Women's Track Best Field Event Performer
Vonnetta Epps-Women's Golf Most Valuable Player
Spencer Slade-Men's Golf Most Valuable Player
Ivy Smith and Patrice Robinson- Women's Basketball Co-Most Valuable Players
Joseph Flegler and Lazarius Coleman- Men's Basketball Co-Most Valuable Players
Michael Allegretti-Baseball Best Pitcher

Shed Dawson, assistant athletics director for academic services announced that Jessalyn Ross, Victoria Burch,Chantasia Bridges, William Riley and Kiana Smith were all new members of Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society.

The SSU Booster Club president Horace Scandrick presented two student-athletes with the annual W. W. Law Scholarship Award.
Winning the awards this year were junior Jeria Arthur, a member of the softball team from Covington, Georgia majoring in mass communications and freshman Spencer Slade, a member of the men's golf team from Ann Arbor, Michigan majoring in history. Both will receive a $500 scholarship.

SSU president Dr. Earl Yarbrough said he was pleased with the ceremony. "It's rewarding to see athletes doing well in the classroom and on the playing field".

Paula Jackson, SSU's interim athletics director added "it's always a pleasure to participate in an athletics banquet". She reminded the athletes to always stay focused. "Regardless of what's going on, always keep your head up because you are representing Savannah State University".

At the end of the banquet, Jackson announced the donation of $100,000 by Georgia Pacific to the SSU athletics department.

The event was sponsored by the SSU student-athlete advisory committee, SSU Community Booster Club and the SSU Department of Athletics.
